Bungee Jumping
On a trip to Switzerland in 2000, I visited the Contra Dam, Verzasca, in the southern Swiss Canton of Ticino.
Located a few miles up the valley from the tourist centre at Locarno, this spectacular Dam was used as the location of one of the most audacious stunts ever filmed. The pre-credit sequence for the 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye starts with the shadowy figure of a man running along the top of a dam. Pausing only to tie a rope to his ankles, attaching the other end to railings, he launches himself into the abyss. After a breathtaking descent towards the floor of the valley, he pulls a gun from his jacket and fires a roped piton hook into a building located beneath him. Before the elasticated bungee cord can whisk him back to the top of the dam, a small winch on his weapon winds the rope in and slowly pulls him onto the roof of the building. This can be only one man.
Bond, James Bond.
But now you can be that man (or woman). For the sum of only 255 Swiss Francs (£105) you can follow in the footsteps of 007 and plunge 220 metres down the face of a Dam in Switzerland. Sadly, I only had SFr254 with me, so I had the extremely dangerous task of taking photographs and video of the lucky individuals who had the money and guts to repeat this amazing stunt, first performed by Wayne Michaels.
