ALASKA CRUISE : 8

FLYING OVER THE MISTY FJORDS

Our cruise through the fjords came to an end as we docked with the floating airport in Rudyerd Bay. A steady stream of floatplanes, mainly DeHavilland 'Otters' and 'Beavers, circled overhead before swooping down to land on the calm water. Each plane taxied up to the dock as names were announced for passengers taking the flight back to Ketchikan.

Finally our turn arrived, and we left the boat to board our plane, a six-seated DeHavilland DHC-2 "Beaver" operated by Pacific Airways. The inside was fairly cramped, but we soon got ourselves comfortable right behind the cockpit. We donned our headsets so we could hear the commentary by the pilot as we coasted away from the platform. He applied full throttle and we quickly became airborne, climbing steadily between the steep wooded sides of the fjord. Not far ahead of us another 'Beaver' was navigating around the coastline, but we soon lost sight of him as our pilot expertly maneuvered his own route over the Misty Fjords.

We headed out over the Behm Canal, over flew the New Eddystone Rock, then along the coast of Revillagigedo Island. Inland we saw a large number of lakes, rivers and streams meandering across the barren landscape, no sign of roads or habitation since few buildings are allowed in the Misty Fjords National Monument. The views were breathtaking, the cloudy weather giving an eerie quality to the landscape. We continued northwards over the island before circling around and passing over many coves and small sandy bay's.

All too soon we spotted Ketchikan in the distance and knew our trip was soon to be over. Descending towards the sea, we flew past the cruise liner 'Island Princess', and then calmly set our pontoons down onto the water. We taxied along to the float plane dock where we stepped ashore and thanked our pilot for the exhilarating adventure. This trip is highly recommended, whatever the weather you are assured of spectacular views and a wonderful flight experience.
